FAQS

Our Answers

Below you’ll find a list of some of the common questions that we receive. Whether your question is about a specific training session, our experience, or the benefits of pet obedience, we’re sure we can help you get the answers you need.

WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO PET TRAINING?

Our approach to training is force free. We follow recommendations set forth by the American Veterinary Medicine Association.

This means that we do not use aversives, such as a shock collar or a prong collar. We believe that these tools simply aren't needed for the cases we work with, and in most cases, would do more harm than good. Instead, we use rewards such as food, praise, or play, to reward the dog.

CAN YOU HELP MY DANGEROUS DOG?

That depends. I do take bite cases, but you must follow my instructions and management plan, or we will not be able to work together.

If your dog is only exhibiting behaviors such as barking and lunging, it may not be aggression based, and may be frustration-based reactivity. In other words, the dog gets overly excited, but is not a threat.

I assess these cases on a case by case basis, so please schedule a consultation for more information.

WHAT ARE YOUR QUALIFICATIONS?

I have been training dogs since I was 9 years old, and began training animals (horses and dogs) professionally at 17. I have trained service dogs (and am about to train my second), worked with reactive dogs privately and in a class setting, worked with separation anxiety, and I lead puppy and basic obedience classes.

I am on track to take the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainer's knowledge assessment in March 2023, and there are only 5,000 people world wide with this certification.

I am also part of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, which is a professional organization promoting liminally invasive, minimally aversive techniques in dog training. There is a great network of support here, as well as many education resources. I am proud to be a member, and to bring the best techniques to you.

I am insured, and have contracts to protect you and me.

WHICH OF YOUR SERVICES IS RIGHT FOR ME?

That's a question that only you can answer! That said, I do find that those enrolled in programs see faster results. If you are in the state of Minnesota, I highly suggest one of my programs, and if you are outside of it, I recommend virtual sessions.

IS MY PET TOO OLD TO BE TRAINED?

No. No dog is ever too old to learn new tricks. They may be used to doing things a certain way, but with consistent rewards and patience, they can learn another.
